چکیده

T hroughout history there has always been a struggle in the human mind between the discrete and the continuous. This difference in viewpoint climaxed in the 17th century because of a fundamental conflict in the cosmologies of Descartes and Newton. The 17th century was arguably the century of scientific genius: Kepler, Napier, Bacon, Galileo, Descartes, Fermat, Pascal, Huygens, Hooke, Boyle, Leeuwenhoek, Newton, and Leibniz.

Elasticity: Stress and strain: BASIC SEISMOLOGY 3

E lasticity is the property that enables a fluid or solid body to resist change in size and shape when an external force is applied and to return to its original size and shape when the force is removed. This concept is a major building block in seismology because it is the elastic properties of rocks which allow seismic waves to propagate through the earth. The theory of elasticity is one of t...

Geopersia is published biannually by the College of Science, University of Tehran, Iran. The College of Science published Journal of Science, which covered all fields of basic science, from 1968 to 2010. It was then decided that the College’s journals should be more specialized, and hence publication of Geopersia was launched. Articles printed in Geopersia will be available online too. Aims an...

Cartesian Stiffness Matrix Mapping of a Translational Parallel Mechanism with Elastic Joints

This paper is devoted to calculating the Cartesian stiffness matrix of a translational parallel manipulator with elastic joints. The calculation takes into account the contribution of the Jacobian variation because of the change of manipulator configuration due to the elasticity and it covers the entire theoretical workspace of the manipulator. Three kineto‐static adimension...

First Principles Derivation of Displacement and Stress Function for Three-Dimensional Elastostatic Problems, and Application to the Flexural Analysis of Thick Circular Plates

In this study, stress and displacement functions of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity for homogeneous isotropic bodies are derived from first principles from the differential equations of equilibrium, the generalized stress – strain laws and the geometric relations of strain and displacement. It is found that the stress and displacement functions must be biharmonic functions. The deriv...

A Simple Locking-Alleviated 3D 8-Node Mixed-Collocation C0 Finite Element with Over-Integration, for Functionally-Graded and Laminated Thick-Section Plates and Shells, with & without Z-Pins

Following previous work of [Dong, El-Gizawy, Juhany, Atluri (2014)], a simple locking-alleviated 3D 8-node mixed-collocation C0 finite element (denoted as CEH8) is developed in this study, for the modeling of functionally-graded or laminated thick-section composite plates and shells, without using higher-order or layer-wise zig-zag plate and shell theories which are widely popularized in the cu...
